When Is The Best Time & What Is Best To Eat Before And After I Train?
At one of the recent classes I was asked about meal timings and what is the best thing to have before and after training. The class was at 6:45-7:15am so a lot of people would struggle to wake up, eat and then get to an early class due to not wanting to eat anything heavy early in the morning or waking up earlier to be able to have something.
Ideally then for an early class you may want to have something small e.g. a piece of fruit, yogurt or a bagel 30-45 minutes before the workout.
If you workout later in the day then having something like a 500-600 calorie nutritionally balanced meal 2-3 hours before you workout would work well. After your workout you want to have a high protein, well balanced meal, doing this helps your body to:
Decrease muscle protein breakdown
Increase muscle protein synthesis (growth)
Restore glycogen stores
Enhance recovery
The Protein in your meal (chicken, turkey, eggs, fish, red meats) help to repair and build muscle. The carbs help with recovery by replacing glycogen stores. The best time to have this meal is ideally within 45 minutes – 2 hours of finishing your workout, the quicker the better as your ability to rebuild glycogen and intake protein is enhanced after exercise.
